Motorola is going to have a rough time hanging on to its number three position in the rankings of global mobile phone market share.

  • Nokia is #1 with a 41% share.
  • Samsung is #2 with 16%.
  • Motorola is #3 at 8.6%.

But Motorola can hear footsteps. LG is closing in, and growing more quickly.

Every hour, Nokia sells more than 50,000 handsets. The strongest demand right now is in Africa and Asia.

Near Field Communication: What’s the Big Deal about NFC?

April 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Nokia has just launched a new 3G 6212 Classic… a key feature is Near Field Communication, naturally known as NFC.

What’s the benefit?

Near Field is about sharing content and paying for stuff.

Paying for stuff like tickets. Sharing stuff like contact information and videos.

Some of this has been happening for years in Europe and Asia. Unfortunately not in America and the Nokia 6212 Classic won’t be coming to America when it’s shipped later this year.

But as we keep an eye on our cell phone futures NFC is a technology we’ll probably fall in love with…

“NFC-capable handsets such as the Nokia 6212 classic are set to change the way mobile phone users interact with devices and services in their surroundings,” says Jeremy Belostock, the Head of Near Field Communications, Nokia. “With the Nokia 6212 classic, people can swap items like business cards or calendar notes by simply tapping their handsets together. With ever-increasing device functions and services available, ease-of-use is essential. One way to keep things simple is NFC.”

Here’s how it works. You tap an NFC-enabled tag and you suck in content… weblinks, audio files or contact data.

You fire up a browser, an FM radio tuner, or a profile in the handset or open applications such as FM radio or web browser. You can also share videos and pictures.

As for making payments and buying tickets… you need to subscribe to a separate service for this.
